Service Description

This course will show you how to make simple printing blocks carved out of lino and how to then print using the design you have created. The process is skilled and takes time, but on this course you will learn how to use the basic tools and produce a simple small design that could be used in different ways. Demonstration : How to choose and carve out a design • Create a very simple small design (on a sheet of paper 12cm X 12cm) or chose one from a selection provided. • Draw out onto the lino and decide which areas are to be cut away • On the practice piece of lino try out all of the cuts made by the different blades. Each lino cutting handle has five removable blades. • Carve out your design. Demonstration : How to mix, apply and print onto paper. • Practise applying ink and printing with one of the samples provided. • Choose one colour of ink only for each print (there will only be a choice of three or four colours, NOT including black). • Carefully ink up the small roller. Each roller must stay with the colour it starts with. • Invert printing block and use large roller to apply pressure CAREFULLY to print onto paper selected. The prints may need some time to dry. Different ideas will be discussed as to how you could enhance your print once it has dried. There will be a few paints and felt-tipped pens provided, but please feel free to bring your own paints, brushes and crayons etc. The time needed to complete each step will be different for each person. Hopefully you will end up with a selection of prints you will be able to develop or enhance. You will be given one card with an envelope onto which you may glue one of your prints, if you so wish. However there are various possible ways in which you could use these prints and provided you are careful not to crack or damage the lino block you will be able to continue to use it and make as many prints as you wish at home. What you will need to wear and bring with you. Printing is a potentially messy business! The inks are water-based, however, please bring your own apron and wear clothes you don’t mind getting inky and keep sleeves rolled up or covered. It is worth keeping a damp sponge of some description by your side and a cloth, towel, or paper towel for cleaning hands in between each print. If your prints are not completely dry at the end of the session, put a sheet of kitchen towel in between each to take away safely. The print size will be 12cms X 12cms square
